GPT Image 2.5 Free: ChatGPT Limits and API Access Guide

Understand GPT Image 2.5 free access in ChatGPT, Sketch and Codex, why the API has no supported free tier, and how reAPI starter credits and refunds work.

Choose the access path based on the job. If you want to create or revise an image in a conversation, ChatGPT Free is a useful starting point when the feature is available in your account. If your application needs to submit requests automatically and collect image results, plan around API access and the relevant API balance.

Do not treat a successful consumer image request as a test of an API key. It establishes that the consumer feature worked for that account at that moment. The API has its own access and billing setup.^[6]

ChatGPT Free image limits are separate from text chat

OpenAI's Free Tier FAQ includes image creation among the tools available to free users. It also says file uploads, image generation and other tools have separate usage limits, and that ChatGPT notifies you when an applicable limit is reached.^[2]

The current FAQ does not give a fixed daily allowance for GPT Image 2.5. A historical quota for another image model, a number quoted by an unrelated site or another user's remaining allowance should not be presented as the current limit for everyone.

When you reach the image limit, follow the notice shown in the product and wait until the feature becomes available again. The help article describes waiting before reusing a limited tool. It does not promise that starting another conversation creates a new allowance.^[2]

Plan a short session around a clear image brief. Put the exact text, desired composition and details that must stay unchanged in the request before generating. Preparing the brief helps each available attempt answer the question you wanted to test.

Account options can change feature access

There is an exception worth checking if Free image generation is absent. OpenAI's ads documentation says that the optional Ads-Free experience for some Free users comes with reduced feature access, including the possible loss of image generation. These controls depend on regional eligibility.^[9]

If you selected that option, review the explanation in your account settings. This is an account-feature distinction, not evidence that Images 2.5 was removed from ChatGPT generally. A reached usage cap and an unavailable feature need different checks.

Sketch and editing use the ChatGPT image workflow

You can also upload an existing image and request changes. The editor supports selecting an area, but OpenAI notes that edits may extend beyond the selection. Inspect both the changed region and the parts you wanted to preserve.^[5]

Images with thinking is another distinct feature. The current help page lists it for Plus, Pro and Business rather than every tier.^[5] Basic image access on Free therefore should not be described as access to every image mode or account feature.

Why API access and Codex usage need separate checks

The OpenAI model pages mark the API Free tier as Not supported for both Flare and Sunburst.^[3]^[4] Creating an API key does not change that published access boundary. Check the API organization's actual access before building a product around the model.

OpenAI also states that the API platform and ChatGPT have separate billing systems. A ChatGPT subscription is not an API credit balance, and adding a payment method for API usage is a separate setup step.^[6]

Codex's built-in generator uses included limits

The Codex image-generation guide says built-in generation counts toward general Codex usage limits. It distinguishes that workflow from generating through the API with an API key.^[8] “Included with my account” consequently does not establish unlimited generation or a separate renewable image grant.

There is also a model-identification limit. The September 8 launch announcement includes Images 2.5 in Codex, but the current built-in image guide still names gpt-image-2. The reviewed documentation does not establish a built-in switch for choosing Sunburst specifically.^[1]^[8]

If your question is “Can I use Sunburst inside Codex free?”, separate the two requirements. First confirm that the session has a working image tool and available included usage. Then determine whether the workflow actually identifies the requested variant. An image appearing in the conversation answers the first question; it does not, by itself, answer the second.

For exact model selection in an application, use the documented API configuration and its own access arrangement. Avoid presenting that switch as a way to continue spending a consumer image allowance.

What reAPI starter credits cover

The GPT Image 2.5 model page describes a small starter grant for new accounts, pay-as-you-go usage, no monthly subscription requirement and credits that do not expire. It explicitly distinguishes the introductory grant from a free tier.^[7]

The public page reviewed for this article does not specify a universal starter-grant amount. Check the balance actually granted to your account. Without that amount and the selected request estimate, there is no defensible fixed number of free GPT Image 2.5 images to promise.

The grant is useful for evaluating a real request. Select the model and settings, read the estimate and confirm that the available balance covers the reservation. Keep the test focused on the feature you need, such as a reference edit or transparent output. A successful generic landscape is not much evidence for a product that depends on readable labels.

Refunds restore a failed request's reserved credits

reAPI's documentation describes an estimated reservation at submission and automatic refunds for failed generations. It also states that each delivered image is billed.^[10] A refund returns the amount reserved for that failure; it is not a new grant or an additional recurring allowance.
